What should a Men’s skincare routine look like?
Even with the advent of Metrosexualism(if that’s even a word) and the explosion of men’s skincare products in our local markets, we don’t see many men practicing skincare on a daily basis. This post is mainly to urge men to actually have a skincare routine.
Our skin is the same whether you are a man or a woman. So don’t be fooled by marketing claims made by cosmetic companies. As a man you can use all the same products used by your mother, sister or wife.
The only difference in men’s routine is that they shave regularly(except no shave November!). Also, men have slightly thicker and oilier skin than women so that also needs to be taken into account when developing a skincare routine
It is very important to keep your skin clean and within a healthy pH range to avoid skin concerns such as acne, blackheads and whiteheads. Also since men have have oilier skin than women they have a higher tendency to get blocked pores and acne. It’s therefore, necessary to wash your face twice a day(morning and evening) with a good face cleanser, I also recommend the oil cleanse method for men. This can be done a few times a week or daily depending on your preference.
It is personal choice to keep facial hair or shave it. But it is necessary for you to understand, that if you shave regularly you must change up your blades once they start becoming blunt. If you use blunt blades, they will pull on your hair follicles which can lead to bruising of the follicle and cause bumps. Some blades do have a longer life so it is imperative that you disinfect them between uses, to avoid any sort of skin conditions.
Also, with shaving creams and lotions avoid using products with very heavy fragrances, since fragrances are known to irritate your skin. I recommend Biotique Bio Palmyra Shaving Cream.
3. Sun protection
Men spend more time in the sun than women. Hence, it is more important for them to focus on sun protection. Like I said all skin is the same so men can also use the same sun protection products as women. The rule of using sunsreen is to apply 20 mins before stepping out in the sun and every 2 hours while you’re out. Always use a broad spectrum sunscreen to protect yourself from both UVA and UVB rays. [Read more on Sunscreens] My favourite sunscreen is Glenmark La Shield Sunscreen Gel SPF 40.
4. Night time care
Don’t take the entire days dirt and grime to bed. It’s a good idea to wash your face before bed and do use a good moisturiser as well. The perfect routine is of cleansing, toning and moisturising. But, if that just spun your head and you don’t think that you could keep that up. Keep it simple and use a good cleanser and moisturiser at night as well. My favourite nightime moisturiser is hands down Shahnaz Husain Shalife.
If you’re a fan of getting facials, that’s great. Facials not only keep your skin looking good, facial massages can help with keeping your skin tight and wrinkle-free. But, if you’re embarrassed about getting a facial, try using an exfolaitor and a face pack once a week. This will help remove dead skin and other pore clogging yuckiness and keep your skin looking fresh. Try my favourite Biotique Bio Papaya Revitalizing Tan-Removal Scrub and Shahnaz Husain Professional Power Root Marrow Skin Cleansing Face Pack.
